Tips for improving self-belief

Self–belief, according to the dictionary definition, is to have confidence in your own judgement or abilities.

Having self-belief and self-confidence does not mean you are never willing to change or adapt but rather that you are aware of your own strengths and weaknesses - thereby allowing yourself the opportunity to work on those weaknesses - with the aim of achieving goals successfully.

Research has shown that those with self-confidence might experience better health due to reduced stress levels. They may have more time for doing the things they enjoy and find they also have more time to spend with the people they love as they are able to set healthy boundaries. An increased positive attitude, reduction of social anxieties, greater focus, improved performance, increased motivation and a generally greater level of happiness are some of the benefits that may come with having self-belief.

Here are 12 helpful tips to improve your self-belief (Mind Tools 2016):

Preparing for Your Journey

  1. Take inventory of what you’ve already achieved.
  2. Think about your strengths and weaknesses (but especially your strengths).
  3. Think about your goals and values.
  4. Practice stopping negative self-talk in its tracks - replace it with positive thinking.
  5. Commit to the journey to self-confidence!

Setting Out

  1. Identify and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.
  2. Focus on the basics - don’t get bogged down in details or reaching for perfection.
  3. Set small goals and achieve them to “pile up successes.”
  4. Keep working on your positive thinking and self-talk.

Accelerating Towards Success

  1. Celebrate your successes.
  2. Keep yourself grounded.
  3. Assess your current level of self-confidence and identify what strategies you can use to keep building it up.

Remember that this is a journey and there will be obstacles along the way or times when you find it a lot more difficult than others. The key is to not be too concerned about this as it happens to everyone from time to time. The most important thing is to get back on track as soon as you feel able to.
